How to play

All cards start face down. Tap one to reveal it, then tap a second. If the two match, they stay up. If not, both turn back over after a moment and it is your job to remember what was where.

Find every pair to finish. The move counter counts each pair of flips, so the theoretical minimum for eight pairs is eight moves, which would require knowing the layout in advance.

How to get meaningfully better

Memory games look like a test of raw recall. They are mostly a test of method, and two techniques make a large difference.

Search in a fixed order

Most people tap semi randomly, which means they revisit cards they have already seen and miss ones they have not. Instead, work through the grid systematically, left to right and top to bottom, on your first pass. You will learn the board's contents in a predictable sequence, which is far easier to hold than a scattered set of facts.

Attach a location, not a picture

The useful memory is not "there was a rocket somewhere". It is "the rocket is third along the second row". Encoding position rather than presence is what lets you go straight to a card when its partner appears.

This is a version of the method of loci, the ancient technique of remembering things by placing them at points along a familiar route. It works here because the grid is already a spatial layout, so you are working with how memory naturally handles place.

Play the information, not the pair

Here is the point that most players miss. When you flip a card and its match is not known, you have not wasted a turn. You have gained information. The best second flip in that situation is often a card you have never seen, because it either matches, or it teaches you something new.

Flipping a card you already know cannot match is the genuinely wasted move, and beginners do it constantly out of a vague sense of checking.

The theory, briefly

With perfect memory and optimal play, the expected number of moves for n pairs is a known result in probability, and it comes out a little above n. The gap between that and human performance is almost entirely forgetting, not strategy.

What is interesting is where people fail. Recall of the first few cards is usually good and recall of the most recent is good, while the middle is weak. That is the serial position effect, the same reason you remember the start and end of a list better than the middle. Knowing this is useful: after a long sequence of flips, deliberately re-examine what you saw in the middle of it rather than trusting that you have it.

Hard is genuinely hard, because twelve pairs is well past the number of items most people can hold at once. That is the point at which method stops being optional.

Common questions

How is a move counted?

One move is one pair of flips, whether or not it matches. So finding all eight pairs in eight moves would be a perfect game, which requires already knowing the layout.

What is a good number of moves?

Roughly twice the number of pairs is a solid result. Under 16 moves for 8 pairs, or under 26 for 12, means you are remembering positions rather than guessing.

Does memory training actually transfer to anything else?

The evidence for general memory improvement from games like this is weak. What does transfer is the technique, specifically encoding items by position and searching systematically. Those are genuinely useful habits, but they are skills you practise rather than a capacity you expand.

Why do I forget the cards in the middle?

The serial position effect. Recall is strongest for the first and most recent items in a sequence and weakest in the middle. Knowing this, it is worth deliberately revisiting what you saw partway through a long run of flips.

Is the layout different each time?

Yes, the cards are reshuffled on every new game and whenever you change the difficulty.
